Echocardiogram Q & A

What is an echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram is a noninvasive, painless test that uses sound-wave technology to create a live-action image of your heart. The ultrasound device sends sound waves that bounce off different parts of your heart and return back to the probe. The sound waves are then changed into images that are viewed on a computer screen.

This test allows the team at Naples Heart Rhythm Specialists, P.A., to assess both the structure and function of your heart.

Why would I need an echocardiogram?

Your doctor may recommend an echocardiogram if you’re experiencing symptoms of heart disease. The diagnostic test provides valuable information about your heart, including the thickness and size of your heart, the shape of the heart chambers, and how well your heart pumps blood. It can also identify abnormalities, such as:

  • Problems with your heart valves
  • Changes in the outer tissue of your heart
  • Holes in the heart
  • Blood clots
  • Tumors

The echocardiogram also looks at the blood vessels leading in and out of your heart to assess for problems.

The team uses the diagnostic data gathered during your echocardiogram to diagnose a cardiac condition or assist in the development of your treatment plan.

How do I prepare for an echocardiogram?

The echocardiogram is a noninvasive test and doesn’t require any special preparation unless you’re directed otherwise by your doctor at Naples Heart Rhythm Specialists, P.A. You can eat and drink as usual before the test.

What can I expect during an echocardiogram?

Your echocardiogram is performed at the office. The test is painless and takes an hour or less. Before the test begins, the team may request you remove your shirt and change into a gown. Then we have you lie on the exam table on your back or left side.

Your technician then attaches electrodes to your chest for an electrocardiogram (EKG), which measures the electrical activity in your heart. Then a special gel is placed on your chest, and the ultrasound device (called a transducer) is placed on your chest and moved around to generate the moving pictures of your heart.

The team evaluates the results of your echocardiogram and develops your treatment plan. Once your test is complete, you can resume your usual activities.
