Chest Pain Q & A

What causes chest pain?

Chest pain can be the result of a number of underlying acute and chronic health conditions. Pain can be occasional or become persistent, depending on its root cause.

Chest pain can be caused by a number of cardiac and noncardiac conditions, including but not limited to:

  • Heart attack
  • Poor blood flow to the heart
  • Mitral valve prolapse
  • Pericarditis
  • Lung dysfunction
  • Stomach or esophageal problems
  • Costochondritis

Individuals that have an underlying anxiety or panic disorder may experience occasional or recurrent chest pain.

How is chest pain diagnosed?

To better understand the source of your chest pain, your provider at Naples Heart Rhythm Specialists, P.A., reviews your personal and family medical history. We also discuss any other symptoms you’re experiencing in addition to chest pain.

There are several diagnostic tests available on site that the team of heart specialists can use to identify the cause of your pain, such as:

  • CT scan
  • Chest X-ray
  • Cardiac PET scan
  • Carotid doppler
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG)

A cardiac single-photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT) scan is also available, which can help diagnose issues like coronary heart disease as well as evaluate the function and size of your heart.

The team at Naples Heart Rhythm Specialists, P.A., may also perform stress testing to evaluate how well your heart is functioning. Stress tests are typically noninvasive and involve walking on a treadmill while you’re connected to heart-monitoring equipment.

What treatments are available for chest pain?

Based on the results of your diagnostic testing, your provider creates a treatment plan. The plan focuses on treating the root cause of your chest pain.

For chest pain resulting from poor blood flow to the heart, you may need medications to relax the blood vessels or thin your blood to increase your circulation. If you have risk factors for a heart attack, the team may recommend daily aspirin or other medicines.

If you get frequent chest pain due to anxiety or digestive disorders, you may need additional treatment with a specialist to treat your underlying issues and resolve pain.

If you’re experiencing unexplained chest pain, don’t delay in getting a heart evaluation. Schedule a consultation at Naples Heart Rhythm Specialists, P.A., today by calling the office or by requesting an appointment online now.
